Rotary matching grant provides workout stations for Rotary park

City officials and community members gathered at Rotary Park Saturday morning to celebrate $130,000 worth of new shade, and playground and exercise equipment.

“These improvements have more than a monetary value to our community,” said Bart Wagner, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department director. Tourists will enjoy the upgrades and realize the city values its quality of life, which could draw future residents, he said.

Grant funding paid for new playground equipment, flooring and shade at Ramada B as well as 12 pieces of exercise equipment around the Rotary walking paths. The city worked with the local Veterans’ of Foreign War’s ladies auxiliary, the three local Rotary Clubs and the local Moms Club on the projects. The VFW and Rotary clubs helped to raise money and secure grant funding for the projects.

The exercise equipment designed for children, active adults and senior citizens, is now placed along the walking paths near the grassy bowl and baseball fields.

Officials also recognized on Saturday mosaic artwork designed by students across Lake Havasu City that is adhered to walls facing the play area.

“If you just take the time to look around, you realize that this park is absolutely phenomenal,” said Lake Havasu City Mayor Mark Nexsen. “It’s just absolutely wonderful. All of this shows when a community works together we can accomplish a lot.”

Amy Nickel, president of the Moms Club of Lake Havasu City, said the shade over the new playground area is the most expansive in the city’s parks system. She said there is one other play area with shade, but it doesn’t cover the entire area.

“Just the idea that we have some place to go and stay out of the sun in the summer time is invaluable,” she said. “I would love to see this at all of them.”
